New Orleans Fried Shrimp Recipe
Ingredients
For the Shrimp:
1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp hot sauce (optional for extra spice)
For the Breading:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
For Frying:
Oil for frying (vegetable or peanut oil)
Instructions
1. Marinate the Shrimp:
In a medium bowl, combine the buttermilk and hot sauce.
Add the shrimp to the mixture and let marinate for 15–30 minutes in the refrigerator.
2. Prepare the Breading:
In a shallow dish, combine the flour, cornmeal, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
3. Bread the Shrimp:
Heat about 2 inches of oil in a large skillet or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
Remove shrimp from the buttermilk mixture, letting excess drip off, and dredge each piece in the flour-cornmeal mixture until well-coated.
4. Fry the Shrimp:
Fry shrimp in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan, for about 2–3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
5. Serve:
Serve hot with a side of remoulade sauce, lemon wedges, or on a po’ boy sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and pickles.
Tips:
If you prefer a thicker crust, repeat the buttermilk and breading process twice.
Adjust the cayenne and hot sauce to control the spice level.
